Appeal Factor: Setting

Annotation:Hannah Coulter spans the life of the title character from the early 1920's through the turn of the century. In his writing, Wendell Berry brings to life the community of Port William and the whole fabric of love, loss, work, family and community which make up Hannah's life. Hannah's vivid memories and descriptions of how life was and the changes she has seen bring you back to a bygone time.

Annotation:A woman’s experiences during the WWII siege of Leningrad/St. Petersburg and her later years living with alzheimer’s in the U.S. Famous artworks play a crucial role and are vividly described. Great for book discussion.

Annotation:Set in Australia in 1806, a man gets sent to a penal colony to finish out his sentence with his wife and 8 children. Not a strong sense of setting, but time period was important to the story. Second appeal was the story. Readalike would be Rose Tremain's The Colour, which is set in New Zealand.

Annotation:A pastor, a Doctor and a reluctant Botanist sail off to Tasmania on a quest, of sorts, with a smuggling Captain and crew from the Isle of Man. The story is told from each of their view points, and many others a s well. This will appeal to readers of Historical Fiction, and those with and interest in Australia and its sister islands, the evolution of science, British Imperialism and colonization.

Annotation:Using Philippe Petit's tightrope walk between the Twin Towers as a backdrop, the novel follows several fascinating lives as they ultimately intersect in New York City.

Annotation:Set in both Brooklyn and Ireland in the early 1950's, Eilis, a bright girl with a gift for numbers, leaves small town Ireland and it's lack of opportunity to embark on an unplanned adventure to America where she finds work, education and romance, until tragedy calls her home. Character was second appeal. A simple, uneventful story that would appeal to those looking for a gentle read.

Description
Books with setting as their primary appeal factor are those in which the place or time of the story is essential to understanding character, conflict or theme. Setting can refer not only to where a book is set but also when. Historical novels often appeal to readers because of the descriptions of their time periods and the physical surroundings in which the characters live and move.
