When Curtis begins to have terrifying dreams, he keeps the visions to himself, channeling his anxiety into obsessively building a storm shelter in his backyard. His inexplicable behavior concerns those closest to him, but the resulting strain on his marriage and tension within his community can't compare with Curtis's privately held fear of what his dreams may truly signify.

Curtis: (to roomful of shocked neighbors) "You think I'm crazy? Well, listen up, there's a storm coming like nothing you've ever seen, and not a one of you is prepared for it."
Curtis: (to roomful of shocked neighbors) "Sleep well in your beds. 'Cause if this thing comes true, there ain't gonna be any more."

Add a CommentYes it's slow and more could have been done in the beginning to make it more apparent that he thought his visions were premonitions. But a good script and some excellent acting and directing do a great job in building to a climax in a psychological context. And just when you think it's over... well, I don't really know about the ending. Anyway, if you enjoy internal conflict and apocalyptic prophets, then this is a good film.
Superb thriller/drama. Not for the impatient 'fast food' viewer who's 'gotta have it right now'. Writer/director Jeff Nichols builds the suspense ingeniously and then unmercifully holds it, with the viewer dangling in limbo wondering 'where this is going'... One is never sure if the lead character Curtis is either 'losing it', with a sadly inherited form of dementia, or all hell and high water is gonna break loose. Brilliant story, character development. It felt like something from Alfred Hitchcock or Rod Serling. FIVE STARS.
I kept waiting for something - ANYTHING - to happen... But, nothing ever did. The characters are incredibly flat and there is barely a story. To top it all off - a completely predictable ending. Don't waste your time!
You need patience, but this movie really gets you to understand his increasing distress over his mental illness. I've heard explanations of the ending that make more sense than the obvious! Good topic.
Skip It - Take Shelter (2011) 120 min. Overlong study of a man believing his dreams to be omens of things to come. Unfortunately, nothing ever, ever comes and this viewer was left with nothing except for 2 hours of a man suffering through episode after episode. Couldn't wait to pop this one out of the DVD player.
Painfully slow and dull.
I would say this is a low-budget film considering there are no well-known actors. That being said, it gets credit for having a credible directorial job as well as good performances from the actors themselves. The choice for the male lead was an excellent one - his facial features gives credence to the role he's playing. Screenplay-wise and story-wise, there's a lot of polishing to be done there...again, the producers were capitalizing on a kind of horror/disaster flick that surely would catch fire.
I really did enjoy this movie. Made me tense when certain events happened. The ending left me wanting to know more.
A Very Slow Moving Movie save yourself one or two hours of your life and pass this movie on. Horrible story line. Poor performance. "I fast forwarded all the way."
shot in Grafton Ohio, great movie. hated the ending.
